About Maikel Beerens
Maikel Beerens was born 25th of January 1985 in Sint-Oedenrode, The Netherlands. While growing up he had special interest in technology. He likes to spend his free time backpacking the world to for e.g. countries where he could practice his passion for Latin Dances. During his thesis he had the privilege to develop a methodology to design, manufacture and market Patient-Specific Implants to reconstruct bone defects of the human skeleton. This was the start of a true and exciting roller-coaster adventure for him. The exam commission congratulated him and decided to let him graduated with highest distinction on top of that he was honored to receive the technology awards for his thesis in 2006. As he explained to me, it has been a roller-coaster for him ever since.
For the case study serving as a guide through his thesis they used the Additive Manufacturing Technology (3D printing) to build a titanium Patient-Specific Implant. The implant is successfully implanted into the patient. Being the first to use this production method worldwide they positioned the Maastricht University Medical Centre on the map as one of the pioneering groups in this field.
After his thesis he continued working on this topic during the first 4 years of his professional career within two EC funded 6th Framework Programs projects Custom-Fit and Custom-IMD, to cooperate in the develop new bio materials and additive manufacturing technologies for Patient-Specific Implants.
In December 2009 he had been given the opportunity to explore the business possibilities of the patient specific implants. As a result of this he recently founded Xilloc Medical from the premises of Maastricht Instruments, leading the starting-up of the company, as a young entrepreneur. He gained entrepreneurial experience trough the new venture creation course at the Maastricht Centre for Entrepreneurship, Maastricht University and trough the start-up experience it self. With Xilloc Medical he set out to revolutionize the implant industry with the fast and reliable production of Patient-Specific Implants to close bone defects of the human skeleton. Xilloc Medical will bridge the gap between surgeons and their patient-specific solution by the use of an innovative system and an experienced team with medical and technical specialists.
For Beerens it is clearly a moral obligation to contribute to the quality of a patients life providing tailored made solutions.
